Art. CUR12 - Archeological find from the wreck of the Nanking Cargo in 1752

Home | Objects | Curiosities | Archeological find from the wreck of the Nanking Cargo in 1752

Extremely rare blue and white shipwreck, part of the so-called "Nanking Cargo" which is the term applied to the porcelain recovered from the wreck of the "Geldermalsen"(a cargo ship belonging to the Dutch East India Company that struck a reef on its way back from Canton China) that sank off the coast of Indonesia on January 3rd, 1752. This cup was recovered in 1985 and sold by Christie's. This particular cup is a very good example that somehow managed to survive over two centuries under the sea essentially unscathed but encrusted with calcified sea life.
